Whether it’s wedding photography or the photography industry in general, change is an integral part of the art and business of photography. From how photographers take photos to how they do business, techniques and strategies often change based on the changes in demand and also the world. And as the world is still in the process of grappling with the COVID pandemic and adjusting to the new normal, for many photographers, it’s their vision and the ability to expand their creative services that have helped them adapt to the current reality and pivot to survive. Oh, WPPI 2020 what do you have in store for us? Once every year in February, photographers from across the globe descend upon Las Vegas for one of the biggest wedding, event and portrait photography conferences in the country—WPPI —or Wedding & Portrait Photography International.  But not many people know about the driving force behind the conference itself—The Director of WPPI, Arlene Evans. Arlene was able to set aside some time in her busy schedule to chat with us about the past, present and future of this incredible event!

WPPI is one of the best investments a photographer can make concerning the future of their photography business. How Jasmin Neidhart of Flora & Grace Photography Got to the Top

For Flora and Grace, becoming a pro wedding photographer includes being internationally recognized in their first year of business – this is every up-and-coming photographer’s dream! But staying humble, grounded, and focused while this happens is another thing entirely.

Jasmin Neidhart had been in business for just 4 years as Grace and Blush Photography (now Flora & Grace Photography) when she was named one of the 30 Rising Stars of wedding photography in the world by Rangefinder Magazine. The Germany based newcomer had barely even heard of WPPI before being invited to host a photo walk and speak on a panel at the convention earlier this year.

“The panel was about how to build a brand, find your style and overcome insecurities in an industry that can be oversaturated.” So what did Jasmin have in common with her fellow Rising Star award winners? “All of the rising stars built a certain style that was different. When I looked at their work and mine, I think what made us all successful is that we just do our own thing. We don’t care about industry trends or editing trends.”

Gurvir Johal is based in the UK and specializes in Luxury Asian Wedding Photography. And while he travels all over the world to shoot weddings, he often meets clients in his office in London. That’s where he’s often met with what he describes as internet-planted gear-specific questions from couples.

“They come in with a list of questions they think they are supposed to ask that they must have read on a forum or in a magazine.” Gurvir humors the couples, answering even the silliest queries. But there was one increasingly common one that forced the photographer to create a special album.

Bud Johnson has photographed weddings in Europe, Iceland, and all over the US. In the beginning of his career, the Savannah, Georgia-based photographer used to travel constantly for work. But a lot has changed over the last ten years of the photographer’s career. 

Bud now has a wife and four young children at home, so he’s less excited about jet setting these days. When Bud decided he didn’t want to travel as much, he picked up and moved his family to Savannah, a known hub for weddings.
